Leading lines are very important in landscape photography as well in other genres and it is important to know how to use it to gain the most from it.

1. Leading lines can be used to guide the viewer’s eye through the scene from the foreground to the background.

2. Leading lines become more effective if it leads the eye to a focal point. We can also call that the line’s destination. The following photos serve as an example.

3. The effect can be further enhanced by the use of multiple leading lines.

4. Leading lines can also be used in action photography by portraying and enhancing speed.

Our eyes are very good at following strong lines and it would serve the photographer well to make use of this inborn tendency when composing the shot. When looking for a good landscape opportunity, be on the lookout for strong lines which can be incorporated. Such lines may be natural like a stream or a row of trees or manmade like roads, footpaths, fences etc.
